ABOUT GILLAN

I grew up in Western Canada in Calgary in the 60's and 70's in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. I was the fourth of eight children. We experienced our share of poverty and chaos growing up in that era, and I always wanted to make sense of it. I was a listener from a young age. I still value and have always valued listening to people share themselves, their stories and history.

I am a Licensed Psychologist in Utah and my Ph.D. is in Counseling Psychology from Brigham Young University. My main focuses in therapy are ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, Depression, OCD, grief, ketamine assisted therapy, gaining a sense of self, repairing the past and navigating challenging relationships.

I coach adolescents, young adults and adults outside of Utah who are working on their own issues as well as parents who are navigating the complexities of launching teens and young adults into this challenging, chaotic and confusing world.

I have invested the past 37+ years helping adults/parents and their adolescent and young adult children navigate to a place of better balance.

I continue to have a very fulfilling career helping individuals and families create peace and balance. I have worked in Alaska, Virginia and Utah as a psychologist and coach.

Over the past few years, after decades of working in programs,  I decided to hang out my own shingle as psychologist and coach. I am the owner and operator of a counseling and coaching practice in Mapleton, Utah, where I live on the main floor of our house with my wife.

Our basement has become a staging ground and launching pad for our four young adult children who range in age from 21 to 30.  They are each pursuing their own paths of independence, relationship and discovery and are frequent visitors and at times, boarders in our basement.  (Currently two of them, as well as partner and pets).

COACHING (USA & INT’L)

While I am a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Utah, I do not offer therapy services across state lines. Relational or personal coaching is different from therapy/counseling in that it’s focus is to facilitate personal and relational development, not to treat psychopathology. Therefore, when I coach, I do not diagnose or treat mental illness. Coaching also requires the capacity in the client to tolerate direct input without it overwhelming or compromising one’s general functioning.

Coaching is designed to uncover capacity and potential in the client with a focus on the client living up to his or her relational and personal potential.

If you and I, at any time, determine that coaching is not a good fit by itself (e.g. there is evidence of psychopathology and the need for therapeutic support), I will support you in finding a suitable licensed therapist within your state to offer the services you need, either in place of our work or in addition to our work. Coaching services are not intended to diagnose or treat mental illness or replace counseling services by a licensed individual within your state.

THERAPY (UTAH)

I provide counseling to adolescents, young adults and adults. It has been my privilege to be immersed in emotional healing for the past 37+ years. I believe that this work is frequently about repairing connections with others and within yourself, including learning to love yourself. I will help you and support you in facing hard things and finding happiness. Through thoughtful questions, I can come to see how you got stuck and I can join you in getting unstuck. I practice being open to the life experience of each person who has the courage to share their history with me. I engage various modalities of treatment, including: a lifetime of honing my practice of trusting my intuition; trauma work; history-taking; family systems work; sitting with unpleasant feelings until they pass and then make room for the good stuff. You can find peace and happiness again. I can help.
