ABOUT GILLAN

I am a coach for adults who are either working on their own issues or who are navigating the experience of parenting teens and/or young adults. I am also a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Utah and my Ph.D. is in Counseling Psychology from Brigham Young University.  I have invested the past 35 years in helping adults/parents and their adolescent and young adult children navigate to a place of better balance.  I offer coaching services to adults who are invested in their own growth and are determined to improve their lives and relationships.

I have been privileged to have a very fulfilling career helping individuals and families create peace and balance for the past three and a half decades. I have worked in Utah, Alaska and Virginia as a psychologist and coach.

Over the past few years, I have narrowed my focus to primarily coaching adults to help them gain balance in their individual lives, their relationship with their spouse, and in parenting their adolescents and young adults who are still finding their way. I am the owner and sole operator of a private coaching and counseling practice in Mapleton, Utah, where I live on our main floor with my wife and our geriatric pets. Our basement has evolved into a staging ground, revolving door and launching pad for our four young adult children who range in age from 19 to 28.  They are each pursuing their own paths of independence and discovery and are frequent visitors to (and
currently for three of them and their partners and pets), occasional boarders in our home.

COACHING

While I am a licensed psychologist in the state of Utah, I do not offer therapy services across state lines. Relational or personal coaching is different from therapy/counseling in that it’s focus is to facilitate personal and relational development, not to treat psychopathology. Therefore, when I coach, I do not diagnose or treat mental illness. Coaching also requires the capacity in the client to tolerate direct input without it overwhelming or compromising one’s general functioning.

Coaching is designed to uncover capacity and potential in the client with a focus on the client living up to his or her relational and personal potential.

If you and I, at any time, determine that coaching is not a good fit by itself (e.g. there is evidence of psychopathology and the need for therapeutic support), I will assist you in finding a suitable licensed therapist within your state to offer the services you need, either in place of our work or in addition to our work. Coaching services are not intended to diagnose or treat mental illness or replace counseling services by a licensed individual within your state.

THERAPY (UTAH)

In the state of Utah, I provide individual, family, and couples counseling, primarily to adults. It has been my privilege to be immersed in therapeutic healing for the past 35 years. I believe that this work is frequently about repairing connections within and with others and sitting with pain until the pain can dissipate. You may numb from pain for a time. I see this as a wise step toward healing. At a point when you decide that you have the strength, you can sit with your pain in the compassionate presence of another. I focus on gathering your perspective of your history in relationship to significant others and your relationship with yourself.
I engage various modalities of treatment, including: a lifetime of honing my practice of trusting my intuition; trauma work; history-taking; family systems work; sitting with unpleasant feelings until they pass; repair of relationships and reintegration of fractured parts.
Broken attachments are fully resolvable within yourself and with significant others, even with a long history of chronic avoidance, even if others have passed on, even if they are still here and remain entrenched. I practice being open to the life experience of each person who has the courage to share their history with me.
